Happiness at Workplace

It’s important to keep an eye on your employee’s happiness both in and out of work. Happier employees are 12% more productive and are more passionate about work. “The greatest competitive advantage in the modern economy is a positive and engaged workforce,”

Companies with higher than average employee happiness exhibit better financial performance and customer satisfaction. Thus, it is beneficial for companies to create and maintain positive work environments and leadership that will contribute to the happiness of their employees.

Here are a few ways:

Do what you Love

The first “innovation secret” used by Steve Jobs is to “DO WHAT YOU LOVE”. Carmine Gallo lists 7 principles in his book “The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs“.

They are:

1. Do what you love
2. Put a dent in the universe – have a big vision
3. Kick-start your brain – use creativity and have lots of different experiences
4. Sell dreams not products – understand what people want to accomplish
5. Say no to 1000 things
6. Create insanely great experiences
7. Master the message

Blame the process, not the people

Rather than blame the people, blame the process from the outset and sort out the problem before it becomes in crisis.

Why not try this:

–          List the steps involved in the job or activity.

–          With your staff helping you, identify where it went wrong.

–          When you know where it went wrong, you can identify what to change in the process at that point.

If you keep having quality problems, then try out this tip: Sort out the process & gain the respect of your staff!

 Growth Mindset:

Changing the workplace environment to nurture the growth mindset is not an impossible feat but a necessary one. Employees or new hires may have a growth mindset, but if the environment isn’t suitable, no amount of water or sunlight will cultivate growth.

What you invest into your team impacts the growth of the business. Employees should not be seen as furniture being added into a room; they’re the pillars in the foundation that remain resilient during times of adversity and adaptive in times of change.

 3

Fix the Culture

The culture of a team reveals how people treat one another. When people are not performing with excellence, often there is a culture of negativity, lagging support, or lack of teamwork. People will not perform at their best in these environments.

You are the leader. Fix the culture. Yes, it’s hard work. But it must be done, and it’s your responsibility as the leader to make sure that happens. When we, as leaders, work to build a flourishing culture, our people will respond in kind.

Resilience in the workplace

A resilient team buffers its members against the adverse effects of stress and helps minimise known risk factors.

Protective factors that can help to build resilience within a team include supportive managers, trust and respect between team members, the ability to make reasonable adjustments, as well as good communication.

Language of a Good Manager:

  1. What do you think?
  2. How can I help?
  3. I trust you.
  4. I am proud of you
  5. I was wrong, I am sorry
  6. Thank you

“Leaders can (1) provide their people with more opportunities for decision making discretion, (2) share more information about the organization, its strategy, and competitors, (3) set and reinforce norms that promote civil and respectful behavior, and (4) offer performance feedback, especially about what is going well. When leaders create workplaces with these characteristics, their people feel like they can grow, develop, and thrive in their work.”
